Retirement: How this Impacts Your Benefits Coverage

June 3, 2025

You’ve made the big decision to retire. Congratulations!

Let’s take a look at what you need to do to wrap up your benefits coverage before you go.

Once you have determined your retirement date, your employer will provide OTIP the date your coverage ends.

Submitting health and dental claimsYou will no longer be able to access your OTIP secure account or My Canada Life at Work. Consider accessing My Claims (My Canada Life at Work) through your OTIP secure account in advance of your coverage ending to submit outstanding claims online and/or to print an explanation of benefits for tax purposes and health and dental claim forms, if required.

• You will have 180 calendar days from the date your coverage ends to submit any claims incurred up to and including your last day of coverage. Please contact Canada Life at 1-866-800-8058 for more information.

• Should you obtain retiree coverage, please ensure your health care providers, pharmacist, and dental office are provided with your new identification numbers.
Options to convert your group life insurance (if applicable)If you are under 65 years of age, you may be eligible to convert your group life insurance to an individual policy without having to provide evidence of good health or undergo a medical exam, provided you do so within -60 days of your coverage
ending.

To learn more about your options and to convert your group life insurance policy to an individual policy, please contact OTIP Benefits

Other things to consider in preparation for your retirement:

  • Contact OTPP (Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan) at otpp.com or OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System) at omers.com. A password is required to log on to your pension account. Gather necessary documents such as your birth certificate, marriage license, spouse’s birth certificate, etc.
  • Learn more about OTIP’s health, dental and travel insurance options for retirees.
  • Consider when you’ll apply for Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security.
